AVIVA NDB Insurance was among the “Super 10” Gold Winners at the prestigious HRM Awards held recently.  AVIVA NDB was the only insurer to win the coveted award.

The awards presentation was organized by the Association of HR Professionals and assessed by AON Hewitt.  At this year’s event held at Cinnamon Grand to a packed audience, AVIVA NDB’s Director, Human Resources, Chathuri Munaweera received the award on behalf of the Company.

The highly acclaimed panel of judges for 2012 comprised IPMA HR Executive Director Neil Reichenberg, Johnson & Johnson Vice President for South Asia, Yashwant Sadashivrao, EFC CEO and Director General Ravi Peiris and Former Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Chandra Jayaratne with Prof. Uditha Liyanage, Director and Chairman of Board of Management of PIM heading the panel.

Liyanage noted that the judging panel was impressed by the strategic approach, clearly articulated plans and competency-based recruitment and appraisals among the best practices demonstrated by the local companies that applied for the award.

The judges assessed the companies based on eight HRM processes via on site and off site audits on HR strategy with link to business strategy, talent supply, performance management, reward & recognition, employee relationship & people administration, leadership & key talent management and building capability. Ten top business entities representing a cross section of industries took home the GOLD.

HRM Awards 2012 crowns best in HR practices

The HRM Awards 2012 held on Tuesday saw 10 top business entities taking home Gold and 12 others securing Silver as well as special commendations.

Winning Gold were Unichela Pvt. Ltd., Aviva NDB Insurance, Brandix Lanka Ltd, Virtusa, DIMO, Commercial Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Unilever, Fonterra Brands and Ceylon Tobacco Company. The Silvers went to 10 private sector entities – NDB, Airtel, DHL Keells, Coca Cola, Amba Research, MAS Active, GlaxoSmithKline, HNB, Aitken Spence and HSBC, while Sri Lanka Telecom and SriLankan Airlines won Silvers in the Public Sector category.
Six special awards were given under sub categories as well. Unilever took home the Special Award for Rewards and Recognition, Virtusa for Employee Relation and People Administration, Standard Chartered Bank for Performance Management Systems, Ceylon Tobacco Company for Talent Supply, HSBC for Leadership and Key Talent Management, and Fonterra for Building Capability.


Held for the fifth consecutive year, the HRM Awards was held at Cinnamon Grand to a packed audience of HRM professionals. Getting bigger and better each year, this year some 80 companies had submitted their applications for the awards ceremony, of which 33 were shortlisted and 22 awarded.


ILO Consultant and former Director General of Employers Federation of Ceylon Franklyn Amerasinghe who was the Chief Guest at the event said that human resource practices had changed over time to become strategic and demanding at present. Noting that being an HR professional was not a 20-20 style but rather one with long innings, Amerasinghe stated that the country’s HR profession had grown by leaps and bounds over the years.


He stated that most companies were now engaged in CSR activities, ensuring financial rewards were given to their employees, developing their skills, and ensuring sustainability in future growth. “Corporate entities are now engaged in responsible behaviour.”


Even though people management must be set against a proper contextual background today, HR managers are put in a narrow role where the goal is to keep shareholders and directors happy. “Human Resources need to now evaluate themselves and what they do to contribute to the people and people management,” Amerasinghe said. “HR strategy must be incorporated with corporate strategy.”


Speaking on behalf of the Panel of Judges – which consisted of IPMA HR Executive Director Neil Reichenberg, Johnson & Johnson Vice President for South Asia Yashwant Sadashivrao, EFC CEO and Director General Ravi Peiris and CASL and CIM Fellow Chandra Jayaratne and headed by Prof. Uditha Liyanage, director and Chairman of Board of Management of PIM.


Liyanage stated that the panel was highly impressed by the number of applications as well as the strategic approaches, clearly-articulated plans and competency-based recruitment and appraisals, along with the best practices engaged by the local companies.


Highlighting points for the future development of the industry, he stated that employee branding in companies was poor. “We did not see this much. There also seemed to be no clear articulation and therefore no proper value proposition,” he said.


In a number of cases the panel also did not see a clear articulation between values and behaviours. “We need to see the connection between desired behaviour, recognition and succession planning.”

Brandix, Sri Lanka’s top apparel exporter, has been adjudged Asia’s ‘Best Brand’ for the second consecutive year by Chief Marketing Officer Council and also winning three more awards at the 2012 CMO Asia Awards for Excellence in Branding and Marketing, which was held at Park Royal in Singapore. The Best Brand award is based on an independent evaluation by the CMO Council, which considers ‘Mind Share,’ ‘Market Share’ and ‘Commitment Share’ as the principal criteria for the accolade.

According to the CMO Council, the principal criteria used in selecting the winner of the best brand award, encompasses a brand’s strength in the minds of consumers of the respective product category; a brand’s strength in a certain market in terms of consumers’ actual buying behaviour and a brand’s strength in encouraging consumers to buy that brand in the future. People's focus on Brandix was recognised by the award for ‘Best Talent Management Practices in Asia,’ which was hosted by Universum Global, a world leader in Employer Branding and conferred by the World HRD Congress, while Ashanthi Fernando, Head of Group HR Operations, was honoured with an ‘Achievers and Leaders’ award in the field of Human Resources, presented by the Stars of the Industry Group.

Additionally, Brandix received an award for the ‘Best In-house Magazine for the Group’s Viyaman quarterly periodical.

The best brand award statuette and a citation acknowledging ‘the valuable contribution made by the Brandix brand’ as well as the Best In-house Magazine award was accepted on behalf of the Brandix Group by Anuk De Silva, Head of Corporate Communications.

The Talent Management award and the Achievers and Leaders award was accepted by Ms. Fernando. The third edition of this prestigious awards event was attended by more than 200 senior leaders and decision makers from 25 countries across Asia.

Ashanthi Fernando Wins Top HR Award

The Brandix Group’s leadership in the field of Human Resources Development once again received international acknowledgement when Ashanthi Fernando, Head of Group HR Operations was conferred an HR Leadership Award at the recently concluded Global HR Excellence Awards 2011-2012 in Mumbai, India.
These Awards are presented annually by the World HRD Congress and are aimed at recognizing contributions and leadership in the sphere while benchmarking talent management and HR practices globally.

In addition to the award, Ms Fernando was invited to speak at the Congress and to conduct a master class on ‘Talent Management: Development and Retention in the New World Economy.’

This year’s conference was attended by more than 600 delegates from 119 countries.
